The Department of Environment was established in 1989 as the implementing agency of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Through the Bangladesh Environmental Protection Act 1995, the Department of Environment has been given powers, authority and responsibility for environmental protection, environmental degradation and control of environmental pollution.
The Department of Environment carries out its responsibilities through its headquarters and 6 (six) divisional offices. The departmental offices are as follows:
(1) Dhaka Divisional Office, Dhaka;
(2) Chittagong Divisional Office, Chittagong;
(3) Khulna Divisional Office, Khulna;
(4) Rajshahi Divisional Office, Bogra;
(5) Sylhet Divisional Office, Sylhet and
(6) Barisal Divisional Office, Barisal.

Functions of the Department of Environment:
One of the activities that the Department of Environment is conducting regularly is:
Motivate / compel the concerned organization to take pollution control measures including pollution survey of industrial establishments, identification of polluting industrial establishments and take necessary legal action by conducting mobile court against the person / organization violating Environmental Protection Act and rules as required;
Issuance of Environmental Clearance after necessary inspection and inspection on the basis of application of newly established or existing industrial factory / project;
Reviewing and approving the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report of development activities undertaken by government and non-government organizations and individuals and providing advice on EIA execution;
Receive and deal with environmental pollution related complaints, prevent indiscriminate cutting of hills, survey vehicles and polluters
Conducting mobile courts against vehicles;
Monitoring of air and water quality, analysis of samples of air, water and liquid waste in the laboratory;
Regular collection, analysis, storage of data and sending of reports for quality assessment of rivers, ponds, tubewells and drinking water in different areas of the country;
Take necessary steps to comply with the obligations of various regional and international conventions, treaties and protocols related to the environment at the domestic, regional and international levels;
Adoption and implementation of activities at national and international level to address the effects of climate change.
Take action in the field of conservation and biodiversity of the country;
Undertake activities to control the import, transportation, use, etc. of toxic and hazardous chemicals;
Control of ozone depleting substances;
Take effective steps for sustainable biodiversity management with the participation of people in environmentally critical areas;
Conduct publicity activities to create public awareness about the environment and make environmental information easily available to all and to celebrate the important international days related to the environment with due dignity;
Preparation and distribution of environmental position maps (State of Environment Report) from time to time;
Establishment of partnership activities with various social / cultural / economic groups to encourage public participation in environmental protection and management;
Adoption and implementation of various projects and research on environmental issues;
Prohibit the production and marketing of prohibited polythene shopping bags;
Provide environmental feedback by reviewing and evaluating various projects / initiatives taken at government and private levels;
Organizing various trainings, workshops, exchange meetings, etc. to build capacity in public and private sectors on environmental protection and management;
